Come on out and learn about and protect our precious oak species! Sudden oak death is a tree disease caused by a pathogen (Phytophthora ramorum). This plant pathogen has killed over 1 million oak and tan oak trees in the past decade.  During this event, you'll gain skills and practice in  identifying sudden oak death in California Bay Laurels and Oak species at the Grove of Old Trees. For land owners, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn to limit Sudden Oak Death transmission on your own property.

This event is part of a larger state-wide survey called the SOD Blitz, now in its 17th year.  Before attending this event, please take a few minutes to watch this engaging training video:

On this stewardship day, you can expect to:

  • Hike on and off trails.

  • Survey trees for Sudden Oak Death symptoms.

  • Collecting bay leaves and placing them in envelopes.

  • Fill out simple SOD data sheets.

Where to Meet: Meet LandPaths' staff and other volunteers in the parking lot of the Grove of Old Trees (17599 Fitzpatrick Ln, Occidental, CA 95465). Once everyone arrives we will hike to the project site.

Important Driving Instructions: Please proceed very slowly and never above the speed limit on Fitzpatrick Lane for the safety of neighbors. Please remember to give right of way to vehicles traveling uphill. Stay on Fitzpatrick Lane approximately 5 minutes; the road banks to the left over a cattle grate, and up a moderately steep hill. The Grove will appear on your right. Follow the paved road along the Grove to the parking area on the right.

If you are driving from the local area or know others attending this workday, to your comfort, please consider carpooling to reduce the vehicle impact to Fitzpatrick Lane.  Thank You!.

Does rain mean the workday is cancelled? The stewardship workday will move forward if there is a light drizzle, but a torrential rainstorm will cancel.  Please call 707-544-7284 (then press 1) after 7am the morning of the stewardship day if the weather feels questionable. If you don't hear a notice of cancellation on the outgoing voice message, the stewardship day is moving forward.
