Beginner's Birding at Bohemia Ecological Preserve

Pre-registration is required for this event.  Please scroll down to register. This event will occur in light morning fog or drizzle but, in the event of rain this event will be cancelled. Please call 707-544-7284 (then press 1) after 6am on the morning of the event if it is questionable. If there is no cancellation message the event will continue.

Overview of event:

Join us for a morning of beginner's birding at Bohemia Ecological Preserve. Please note: this is not a hike, but a slow walk. We will walk the property slowly, observing all the birds we encounter. However, for those with mobility issues, please be aware that we will be walking up a steep gravel road.

We will also lead a 15-20 minute "sit-spot" exercise where participants will silently sit and observe any bird (or other) activity in his or her field of awareness. Whether you notice one bird or many birds, you should make note of any vocalization, movements, behaviors and interactions, as well as any field marks (size/shape/color, etc). This exercise will be followed by a walk down to the Meadow, where we can share and discuss observations during a snack break. 

This is a birding walk geared toward beginners, but all skill levels are welcome. We will share tips on using binoculars, teach techniques for locating birds, point out bird vocalizations, and share bird ID field marks for some of the common late-summer and year-round species. We want to inspire participants to get out and appreciate the bird world! 
 

Where:  

We will meet at 8:00am at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve Quarry Road entrance entrance (6773 Bohemian Highway)

Directions to Bohemia Ecological Preserve – south gate: The north gate entrance to Bohemia Preserve is located on Bohemian Highway approximately 3 miles north of Occidental. From the intersection of Graton Road and Bohemian Highway, drive north on Bohemian Highway for approximately 2.5 miles.

A docent will be at the entrance to direct you to parking.
 

When: We will meet at 8am on Wednesday, August 29th.  Thanks for being prompt so that we can start on time.  We will be back to the cars by about 12pm.  

What to bring: Good boots or shoes, picnic breakfast and/or snacks, water, sun protection, weather appropriate clothing and your own binoculars! Also, bring pen and paper for taking notes during the "sit-spot" exercise.

Suggested: camera, walking stick/hiking poles for negotiating the terrain, shade hat.

• There is no charge for this outing, donations are welcomed
• We will stay together as a group
• You will be asked to sign a liability waiver prior to the walk
• No pets or smoking are permitted
• There are porta-toilets, but no other restrooms on our route
• Please review the hike distance and elevation to make sure you are prepared
