Writing Outside: Celebrating Creativity, Nature, and Community

Oliver Sacks once wrote that gardens and nature were essential to his creative process. Let's celebrate the joy of creativity in nature inspired by the stunning beauty of Rancho Mark West!

Facilitated by Leilani Clark, this free and bilingual writing workshop will offer writing prompts and creative inspiration in English and Spanish. We’ll start the day a bit of writing in the garden, which you are welcome to share with the group if desired (no pressure). After that, we'll take a leisurely hike around the property. Along the way, we'll stop for a prompt inspired by Upper Mark West Creek watershed, before heading over to the lake for the final prompt of the day. No critiques, just friendly attention and an appreciation for each other’s courageous expression of ideas and thoughts. This event is most suitable for adults and youth 12 and over. Bring a pen, journal, lunch and snacks, and a willingness to open yourself to the unique creative impulse inspired by the natural world and each other.

Facilitator Bio: 

Leilani Clark is a a writer and editor based in Santa Rosa. She is the Communications Lead at LandPaths and the editor of  Made Local Magazine, a magazine about the Sonoma County food system. A former staff writer at The North Bay Bohemian, Leilani’s writing on food and culture has been featured at Mother Jones, The Guardian, Sonoma Magazine, Time Magazine.com, Food & Wine.com, and Edible Marin & Wine Country. She has been a regular contributor at Civil Eats, KQED,and The Press Democrat. Leilani was a 2014 California Endowment Health Reporting Fellow. Her creative nonfiction has been published at The Rumpus, Fw: Riction Review, and Storyscape Literary Journal. She has a BA in English Literature from University of California San Diego and an MFA in Writing and Consciousness from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco.

What to bring:

• A journal/notebook and writing implement. 

• Lunch, snacks, and water for the day.

• Comfortable shoes for walking. 

• Weather appropriate clothing (layers, sun gear, etc).

Details and what to expect

• There are bathrooms/outhouses on the property.

• You will be asked to sign a liability waiver upon arrival .

• No pets, no smoking and of course no smoking pets! 

• Please note that there will be no early departures, and we will stay together as a group.

• What if its raining? We will continue in a light rain but will cancel in case of heavy rain. If in doubt, please call 707-544-7284 (then press 1) after 11 am on the day of the outing. If there is no special message, the event is on!

Escribiendo Afuera: Celebrando la Creatividad, la Naturaleza y la Comunidad

Oliver Sacks escribió una vez que los jardines y la naturaleza eran esenciales para su proceso creativo. ¡Celebremos la alegría de la creatividad en la naturaleza inspirada en la impresionante belleza de Rancho Mark West! Facilitado por Leilani Clark, este taller de escritura gratuito y bilingüe ofrecerá ejercicios de escritura e inspiración creativa en inglés y español. Comenzaremos el día escribiendo un poco en el jardín, donde tendrán la oportunidad de compartir (si quieren). Después de eso, haremos una caminata tranquila por la propiedad. En el camino, nos detendremos para un ejercicio inspirado en la cuenca del Upper Mark West Creek, antes de dirigirnos al lago para el  el ejercicio final del día. No hay críticas, solo atención amistosa y aprecio por la expresión valiente de ideas y pensamientos. Este evento es más adecuado para adultos y jóvenes mayores de 12 años. Lleve una pluma, un libreta almuerzo o bocadillos, y esté dispuesto a abrirse al impulso creativo único inspirado en el mundo natural de sí mismo.

• ¿Qué tal si llueve? Si hay llovizna ligera seguiremos con el paseo, si hay lluvia fuerte/tormenta el paseo será cancelado. Favor de llamar al 707-544-7284 (y después presionar 1) después de las 8am para confirmar la cancelación del viaje. Si no hay un mensaje de cancelación, entonces el paseo sigue en marcha.
