Sacred Body, Sacred Land: (Re)Connecting to our Healing Ways

Dr. Jennie Luna,  California State University, Channel Islands

My plática will take a holistic approach to examining Indigenous/Xicanx health issues, from decolonizing our diet to Healing inter-generational trauma, traditional food practices, and spirituality. My approach to this work uses a hemispheric/intercontinental lens in examining how Xicanas/os/x must come to the defense of Mother Earth and a commitment to our communities and self-determination. I will explore how Indigenous health issues interweaves body, mind, and spirit. By the end the presentation, participants will leave with concrete ways to implement healthy approaches in their own lives.

Dr. Jennie Luna was born and raised in East San José, California. Granddaughter/Daughter of migrant farm workers and cannery workers, she is first in her family to attend and graduate college. She received her Masters in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and her Ph.D. in Native American Studies from U.C. Davis. She has been teaching Chicana/o Studies and Native American Studies for over ten years at various institutions including U.C. Davis, Mills College, DeAnza College, San José State University, and New Mexico State University. Dr. Luna’s research incorporates Nahuatl language study, representations of Indigeneity, and the role of women in the Intercontinental and global Indigenous movements. As a practicing doula/labor assistant, her other research interests include Indigenous women’s reproductive rights, traditional birthing methods and reproductive justice. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in Chicana/o Studies at California State University, Channel Islands.

• This workshop will take place in the gynasium of Sheppard Elementary: 1777 West Ave, Santa Rosa, CA 95407. The school is directly across the street from Bayer Farm. 
• This event willl be billingual, led in Spanish and English.

La investigación del Dr. Luna incorpora el estudio del idioma náhuatl, representaciones de indigeneidad y el papel de la mujer en los movimientos indígenas intercontinentales y globales. Como asistente profesional de doula / asistente laboral, sus otros intereses de investigación incluyen los derechos reproductivos de las mujeres indígenas, los métodos tradicionales de parto y la justicia reproductiva.

La Dra. Jennie Luna nació y creció en el este de San José, California. Nieta / hija de trabajadores agrícolas migrantes y trabajadores de fábrica de conservas, ella es la primera en su familia en asistir y graduarse de la universidad. Recibió su Maestría en Educación de Teachers College, Columbia University y su Ph.D. en estudios de nativos americanos de la U.C.
