CREPUSCULAR  CRITTERS OF BOHEMIA ECOLOGICAL PRESERVE ; A trip into the world of Bats
and other night-time creatures

Saturday October 27th, 4:30 - 9:30

A potluck dinner with an optional overnight

Led by LandPaths Docent, Joani Joinville

Join Docent Joani and crew  for a late afternoon/twilight hike at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve in the hills of  Occidental.  After a brief introduction to the wonders of the Preserve we will be delving into the world of nature’s magic, enjoying a wonderful potluck dinner (including your favorite beverage), watching the stars and the bats come out, and then talking about (and maybe seeing) more night life. Those interested might even do some spotlighting. We might expect to see:  moths and mosquitoes for sure, some insectivorous bats, possibly owls, perhaps fox, raccoons, skunks, and who knows what else!  Assume you will stay until the end due to logistics. Please ARRIVE by 4:30 pm where we’ll carpool up into the hills. This event is adult-focused.

What if it's raining?  We will proceed in a light rain but heavy rain cancels.  If in doubt about the conditions, call 707.544.7284 (then press 1) on Saturday after 2pm. If there is no special message, the outing is a go as planned. Email outings@LandPaths.org or call 707.544-7284 (ext. 100) with any questions.

What to bring:
Flashlight
Hiking poles (optional)
Water
Binoculars
Chair or blanket
Layers
Most importantly don’t forget potluck food, your own plates, cups, utensils, and beverages of choice

IF STAYING OVERNIGHT:  Bring a tent, bedding, extra water, breakfast, and anything else you need to camp comfortably.

When and Where:
We will meet at 4:30 pm at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve, 6773 Bohemian Highway, just past Westminster Woods. From the intersection of Graton Road and Bohemian Highway in Occidental, travel approximately 3 miles north on Bohemian Highway. The Preserve is on the right-hand side (if you are coming from Occidental) & looks like a quarry. Watch for staff or volunteers located at Bohemian Highway to direct you to parking!

We will need a few 4WD or AWD vehicles to volunteer to drive us up the hill.  Most vehicles can make it up the hill but there are a few tricky spots for 2WD vehicles.

Details, Details:

  • You will be asked to sign a liability waiver.
  • There is a porta-potty on the property.  There is no potable water available on the property.
  • No pets or smoking are permitted and absolutely no smoking pets!
  • We will stay together as a group & leave together.  Early departures cannot be accommodated except in case of medical emergency

LandPaths is committed to steward this new preserve in a way that creates a community asset.  We make this commitment with confidence, knowing together, YOU, LandPaths and the broader community, can create a place that reflects our shared values.  This is particularly important and critical, as Bohemia has no public funding. Please consider a donation for this outing.  You can make a donation online below or in person on the day of the outing.
