Remembering our Ways: Medicinal plants of Bayer Farm

10/14/2020 05:30 PM - 07:00 PM PT
  • Free
As some of the most ancient beings on this planet, plants have evolved and adapted to shape the landscape and our ways of survival, giving us food and tools. Spiritually and emotionally, plants have been used as essential life sources and have provided our ancestors with an immeasurable amount of support, as they continue to do so today. However, the more technological advances we make as a society at large the more we tend to forget about are plant relatives and ancestral knowledge about them.

In this workshop, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most commonly used plants at Bayer Farm. Bayer Farm is an organic community garden located in the heart of Roseland, where the needs of both humans and plants are being tended to. In this session, we will learn about some plants you can introduce to your home or into your self-care routines. This workshop is open to the public, and is free thanks to partnership with Santa Rosa Junior College Intercultural Center.

TrekSonoma: Wild Foraging/ Wild Tending Adventure (October 23rd-25th)

10/23/2020 10:00 AM - 10/25/2020 04:00 PM PT
  • $400.00
Experience Sonoma County through the eyes of Fall bounty! Join us on a three-day wild-foraging and land stewardship program. Witness the bounty that nature offers in our fall season—wild greens, elderberries, rosehips, huckleberries, wild roots and many other tasty ingredients! And while we forage we will learn how to tend these amazing plants and landscapes so that they flourish and become more resilient. We will forage wild ingredients to take home and prepare in your own kitchen. Chef Coby Liebman, who has lived and cooked around the world and specializes in wild ingredients from right here in Sonoma County, will share his favorite wild foraged recipes.

TrekSonoma welcomes Sonoma County locals and friends to come trek with us through native prairie grasslands,  lush riparian forests, and oak woodlands. Over 3 days you will walk through diverse coastal and forested landscapes and explore the bounty the land has to offer. These are day-long classes, but you are welcome to camp separately on the property to avoid driving at night. If you chose to stay overnight you are responsible for all camping gear as well as all food with the exception of lunch. We will be teaching sustainable wild foraging practices as well as wild tending practices to keep foraging areas abundant and well cared for. Now more than ever we need folks who are willing to build local relationships with our neighbors and the land we call home. Come join us and play in our own backyard!

Volunteers will help install erosion control materials, such as wattles and jute netting, on the dozer lines created during the Walbridge fire.  The goal is to stop sediment from entering our watersheds. Volunteers will be able to leave before 3 if needed.
No experience necessary but the workday will require light hiking over uneven terrain.
