Bio Blitz at Riddell Preserve

LandPaths and The California Native Plant Society invite you to participate in a citizen science project at Riddell Preserve, a 400 acre piece of land forever protected by the Ag+Open space district. Located in the hills west of Healdsburg's Dry Creek valley, Riddell is home to regenerating stands of oak and madrone, along with lowly fescue bunch grasses, open meadows, fourth generation redwood “fairy rings,” perennial streams and headwaters. We will gather data on plant species while utilizing the mobile application, Inaturalist. Botanists of all levels are encouraged to see and learn about native flora, while helping us gather data for the Vegetation Mapping effort by the Sonoma County Agricultural and Open Space Preservation District.

Paulin Creek Clean up and Exploration

Lend the land a helping hand with a creek clean-up and exploration of Paulin Creek.  Located in the middle of urban Santa Rosa, Paulin Creek Open Space Preserve is nine acres full of native oaks, madrone trees, and beautiful grasslands. We will start our day with a short hike, and then partake in some activities that will aid in reducing erosion, improving water quality, and make the habitat more suitable for the flora and fauna that call the creek home. People of all ages are welcome to join us in the restoration of this wildlife corridor.

Fitch Mountain is home to six diverse plant communities, ranging from grasslands, to mixed evergreen forests, to wetlands. The mountain provides critical habitat for wildlife and native plant species while providing us with sweeping vistas. Join LandPaths, and Biologist Kate Symonds of the Fitch Mountain association for a Natural History hike along Fitch Mountain. We'll be hiking and stopping along the way to discuss the natural history and ecology of the land, as well as discussing important shrub and tree species of the preserve.

Join LandPaths for a day of exploring the relationship between fires and forests. Participants will learn about fire ecology and the different ways that LandPaths manages its forests at the Grove of Old Trees for biodiversity while minimizing fire risk and creating resilient forests.

Join us for a hike to and through several different forested areas on the Bohemia Ecological Preserve in which we will observe, wonder about and discuss the life, death and transformation of the trees and under story in these woodlands. Our aim during this time will be to take a closer look at the slow tempo dramas unfolding in the lives of trees in a forest, to recognize some of the threats they face and how they respond to these challenges. This outing is a chance to slow down, to open your senses deeply, to be receptive to what lies all around you and learn to hear, see, smell, touch, and (yes!) taste in a new way. We will visit different habitats of the preserve (the Margaret Creek woodland, the Duvoul Creek and nearby meadow) and use a variety of activities to open to new sensory impressions. We will spend time recording our experiences through writing and drawing and will share our findings with others in small groups as well as with the whole group.

Come and visit the crepuscular critters of Bohemia Ecological preserve for a trip into the world of Bats and other night-time creatures, with a potluck dinner and optional overnight. Join Joani, experienced Bohemia docent and crew for a late afternoon/twilight introduction to the Bohemia Ecological Preserve in the hills of Occidental. After a brief introduction to the wonders of the Preserve, we will be delving into the world of nature’s magic. We will enjoy a wonderful potluck dinner, (including your favorite beverage) talk about crepuscular critters, and watch the bats and stars arise! We might expect to see moths and mosquitoes, some insectivorous bats, foxes, raccoons, skunks, and possibly owls. This hike is geared towards adults. Overnight camping is optional.

Despite what Hollywood would have you believe, the witches of yore weren’t brewing potions with eyes of newt or tongues of dog.These names actually reference real plants that are still used today for their medicinal value, and the so called witches were in fact known as healers of their time.Get into the Halloween spirit with us on a hike through the Bohemia Ecological Preserve, where we will learn about these magical plants and their healing properties.We’ll hike through hardwood forest, riparian woodlands, and serpentine chaparral in search of species that have defined the witch mythology we know today.

Join our friends at Old World Winery for an old fashion grape stomping session! Old World Winery is a small, family owned and operated winery in the Russian River Valley. It was founded on the principle that exceptional wines are made better when created with a commitment to environmental and social responsibility. After we help harvest the grapes and do some stomping, we’ll head back to the winery for lunch celebration of the community experience.
